FAQ

Do you make permanent magnet brakes?
We have designed and supplied permanent magnet brakes for a number of industries and applications as standalone products or as part of a larger motor system.

Do you have a catalogue?
All our motors are developed specifically to meet customer requirements, as over the years we have found that this is the only way to provide the best possible solution. This means that we do not have a catalogue of standard designs, however some typical characteristics can be found across many designs.

Do Linear Induction Motors have a higher efficiency than Squirrel Cage Induction Motors?
In a direct motor against motor comparison, no. However, if you were to compare a complete system powered by Linear Induction Motors to one powered by Squirrel Cage Induction Motors the LIM system is in many cases more efficient. Squirrel Cage Induction Motors require gearboxes, differentials, chains, levers, drivewheels etc. which all contribute to overall system losses and thus reduce overall system efficiency. The Squirrel Cage Induction Motor is also usually left running constantly whereas the LIM is only energised when needed.

Do you make Linear Synchronous Motors?
Force Engineering has experience developing high efficiency Linear Synchronous Motor systems for applications including baggage handling. Please contact us for further details and to discuss your requirements.

Do Linear Induction Motors levitate the load?
Our LIMs do not produce a levitation force on the load. Single sided LIMs use backing iron on the rotor, which develops an attraction force between stator and rotor. LIMs can be made to levitate a simple conductive rotor, but will work very inefficiently, producing very small motion and levitation forces which are typically too small for useful work to be performed.

I need a linear motor for my thesis project. Do you have any spares?
Unfortunately, the nature of our business means that we do not usually have unused spare or extra motors. However, we are always interested in development work and would be happy to discuss your particular requirements.
