There are many current industrial applications for LIMs and, with imagination, hundreds more potential applications. LIMs have several advantages over "traditional" drives.

There is no requirement for problematic connecting mechanisms such as chains, gear boxes or belts.

LIMs have no moving parts to get clogged and damaged with dirt, swarf and waste.

They can work in the most rugged environments, heat, cold and even underwater or with toxic chemicals and hazardous or nuclear material.

LIMs are virtually maintenance free and access is normally easier to achieve.

They are incredibly flexible and can move at variable speeds.

They can drive anything from a model train to the launch of aircraft from a carrier deck.

Very rapid acceleration and deceleration.

The industrial applications are only limited by imagination. The case study illustrates one use of LIMs - there are other applications on request.
