Development of U-LIMs

U-LIMs are a type of linear induction motor with U shaped reaction plate that are often used in applications such as baggage handling systems. In response to customer requirements, force developed and produced U-LIMs to tight specifications but with vastly improved electrical and thermal performance versus existing designs. The new motors were a great success and several hundred have been installed in a new baggage handling system.
The main challenge in this work was the novelty of the U-LIM system, as this was the first time U-LIM technology had been developed to full product stage in house. As always, a good working relationship with our customer was vital in order to define and meet the exacting specifications of the project.
Through extensive research and consultation with experts in the field, our development team was able to adapt in house prediction software and employ 3D Finite Element analysis to accurately design and predict the performance of U-LIM type machines.
Prototype machines were then constructed, and full thermal and performance analysis was undertaken to ensure that the machines would operate as expected. Prototypes were supplied to the customer and several visits were made to the customers test facilities to aid in the commissioning of the system.
With the excellent performance of the system conclusively proven, several hundred motors were supplied for the customers full system.
