Force Engineering has established itself as a world leader in accelerated launch systems by supplying Linear Induction Motors to the roller coaster industry.
A conventional roller coaster train is hauled slowly to the top of a hill by a chain lift so the train gains potential energy. Once over the brow of the hill the vehicle accelerates downhill under gravity, gaining speed and converting potential energy to kinetic energy but the maximum velocity of the ride is still a function of the height of the hill.
As coaster designers are always striving for higher speeds and unique elements for riders to enjoy, LIMs can provide a fantastic horizontal launch as well as the ability to put additional energy into a ride at any point on the track, allowing greater design flexibility and continually thrilling ride experience.
LIMs are solid state technology so there is little or no maintenance requirement for the launch system itself which greatly reduces cost and time requirements over a conventional chain drive system. The energy cost of launching a typical ride is much less than imagined at usually less than US$1 per launch.
In the last few years we’ve also helped a leading water ride manufacturer develop and bring a unique product to market which has been both a major critical and commercial success. Gravity pulls the ride rafts downhill whilst Force's LIMs seamlessly power the rafts up-hill making for a unique, wet ride coaster experience.
